As a Park City ski instructor and mom of five, I’ve seen firsthand how the Epic SchoolKids program can be a game-changer for families just getting started with skiing. If you have kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade, this free program is honestly one of the best ways to introduce them to the sport without the sticker shock of full-price lift tickets.

The Epic SchoolKids program lets kids get 5 free days of skiing and if they’re new to the sport, they get one day of free lessons and equipment rentals. There are few other programs out there that offer something like this!

Our kids have used the Epic SchoolKids Passes for year, and there are some great benefits to getting one for your elementry schooler. However, there are some details about the program that you need to know, and I’ll share those below.

The Three Epic SchoolKids Programs: What’s Different

Vail Resorts offers three regional Epic SchoolKids programs, and the differences matter depending on where you live and what you’re looking for.

Epic SchoolKids Utah Pack

Who qualifies: Utah residents, kids in K-5th grade
What you get: 5 free days at Park City Mountain
Registration deadline: October 8, 2025

Family Ski Day at Park City

As someone who teaches at Park City, I can tell you this is an incredible deal. Park City is the largest ski resort in the US, with terrain that can keep kids engaged for years as they progress. The learning areas are fantastic, and there’s enough variety that families won’t get bored across five days.

Registration process: Online registration, then visit Park City season pass office for photo and pass printing (new users) or pass loading (returning users).

Epic SchoolKids Colorado Pack

This is the most generous program in terms of total days – potentially 20 free ski days across five world-class resorts. However, it requires the most commitment from families since you’ll need to travel all across Colorado to navigate different mountains.

Registration process: Must visit a Front Range Epic Mountain Gear store in person with your child present for verification. Not available in Frisco – you have to go to Aurora, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Littleton, Park Meadows, or Westminster.

Epic SchoolKids Whistler Blackcomb Pack

Who qualifies: Canadian residents or Washington State residents only, kids in K-5th grade
What you get: 5 free days at Whistler Blackcomb
Registration deadline: October 8, 2025

This program is the most restrictive in terms of who qualifies, but Whistler is an incredible mountain. If you’re eligible, it’s a fantastic opportunity to ski one of North America’s premier resorts.

Registration process: Online registration, then pick up at Whistler season pass office.

The Critical Details Every Parent Needs to Know

Documentation Required

All three programs require proof of your child’s grade level, but the verification process varies significantly by location. You’ll need to provide a school report card, school ID, school transcript, passport, or birth certificate for any of the programs.

The Colorado program is the most demanding – you must visit a Front Range Epic Mountain Gear store in person with your child present for verification, and this can’t be done at the Frisco location or at any resort.

The Whistler program adds an extra layer by requiring proof of Canadian or Washington State residency through a parent’s driver’s license.

Utah’s program is the most straightforward, allowing online registration followed by a simple visit to Park City’s season pass office for pass pickup.

Epic SchoolKids Blackout Dates (All Programs)

These are the dates when free passes don’t work – essentially every time kids have long breaks off of school 😉 While that can be a bit inconvenient for travel schedules, these are also the most crowded times of the year to go skiing, and we generally recommend avoiding them when skiing with kids.

  • Thanksgiving weekend (November 28-29, 2025)
  • Christmas week (December 26-31, 2025)
  • MLK weekend (January 17, 2026)
  • Presidents Day weekend (February 14-15, 2026)

The First-Timer Lesson Reality Check

Each program includes one free lesson with rental for kids who have never skied or snowboarded. Here’s what you need to know:

Ski school at Park CIty

Lessons are only available on select dates, an must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance. most of the lesson dates are in the beginning of the season, so plan accordingly.

The harsh reality? These lessons book up incredibly fast. I’ve seen families register for Epic SchoolKids in October, try to book their lesson in December, and find nothing available until late January. If you’re counting on that free lesson, call immediately after you register to sign your kids up.

Lesson availability windows:

  • Utah: December 1-13, January 5-16, January 20-30
  • Colorado: To be announced in June 2025
  • Whistler: December 5-19, January 5-16, January 18-February 13, February 21-April 12

What This Program Is Perfect For

As both an instructor and a parent, I think Epic SchoolKids is ideal for families who ski 2-5 days per season and want to make those days count without paying children’s lift ticket prices. It’s perfect for parents who are unsure if their kids will actually enjoy skiing – there’s nothing worse than dropping $150 on a child’s lift ticket only to have them declare they hate skiing after one run. The program also works beautifully for families who want to try Epic resorts before committing to expensive season passes, giving you a chance to see if the terrain and atmosphere work for your family’s skiing style. Finally, it’s great for kids who need a few days to decide if they want to progress in the sport – some children need multiple exposures before they’re ready to really commit to learning.

The Reality Check: Hidden Costs

While kids ski free with Epic SchoolKids, the adult costs can be genuinely shocking if you’re not prepared. Adult lift tickets at Epic resorts run $200+ per day at most locations, and that’s just the beginning. You’re still paying for equipment rentals for kids unless you’re using the free first-timer package, and even then that’s only good for one lesson per child ever. Parking at most resorts costs $30+ per day, resort dining is notoriously expensive (think $15 for a basic kids’ meal), and if you’re traveling to Colorado or Whistler, you’ll need lodging costs on top of everything else. For a family of four with two kids using Epic SchoolKids, you might easily spend $400+ just on adult tickets for one day before you’ve bought a single meal or paid for parking. The program is genuinely wonderful, but it’s not a solution to expensive skiing – it’s a way to reduce some of the costs while still paying premium prices for the adult experience.

My Honest Assessment

Epic SchoolKids is genuinely wonderful for what it is – a way to get kids on snow without paying children’s lift ticket prices. But it’s not a magic solution to expensive skiing. The blackout dates mean you’ll likely be skiing on school days or less popular weekends, which actually can be a blessing with smaller crowds and better learning conditions.

If your family skis more than 5-6 days per year, you’ll probably save more money with season passes. But if you’re just testing the waters or want a few special ski days each winter, this program is hard to beat.

The key is going in with realistic expectations about timing, availability, and adult ticket costs. Register early, book that free lesson immediately, and plan for the full cost of adult skiing. Do that, and Epic SchoolKids can provide incredible family memories without completely breaking the bank.

Action Steps to get Epic SchoolKids

  1. Register by October 8, 2025 – this deadline is firm
  2. Immediately call for first-timer lessons if your kids need them
  3. Budget for adult lift tickets at $150-250 per day per adult
  4. Plan around blackout dates – think weekdays in January/February
  5. Consider season passes if you’ll ski more than 6-8 days total

Remember, the goal isn’t to ski the most days possible – it’s to create positive experiences that make your kids want to keep skiing. Epic SchoolKids can absolutely do that, as long as you plan accordingly.
