I’m Jessica Averett, the creator of Skiing Kids, and I’m obsessed with skiing. Let me tell you a bit more about myself…
I started skiing when I was just 4 years old, and for me, skiing has always been about family. Growing up, my parents would load all the kids up in the car and we’d drive out to my Grandma and Grandpas house where we’d spend a week skiing with my entire extended family. Chairlift rides with Grandpa were always my favorite and those trips were always fueled by giant Thermoses full of Grandmas chili, hot chocolate, oranges, and roast beef sandwiches. LIFE WAS GOOD!
Fast forward to college, and my ski obsession only got deeper. I needed a job, so I got my first job teaching ski school at The Canyons resort in Park City. I taught there for several winters, and I thought that I had hit the jackpot because people paid me to ski. I loved working as a ski instructor so much and I thought I knew so much about skiing.
Soon after, I met my husband, and skiing was destined to be part of our family from the beginning. We were both skiing at Snowbird, hopped in the singles line, and were put on a chair together. We started chatting, which turned into a day of skiing together, and a week later we had our first date. The next winter, we got married.
Soon after, we moved to Colorado, had our first of 5 babies, and we started teaching him how to ski at just 18 months old. In fact, 4 of our 5 kids learned to ski right around 18 months, and the 4th learned when he was 3.
I am completely OBSESSED with tiny little skiers, and even though they can’t do much, they are just SO CUTE!
Eventually, we found ourselves moving back to Utah, where ski instructing became part of my life again, where I started ski instructing again at Park City Resort.
Having spent years teaching my own kids, actually made me a significantly better instructor than I ever would have been if I had just been a ski instructor all my life. I now understood what made kids tick, what motivates them, and best of all, how to combine learning and fun so that kids can learn so much faster than I ever knew was possible.
In total, I’ve been teaching kids to ski for 20 years combined between teaching my own kids to ski and years and years as a professional ski instructor.
In 2025, I took a leap and started teaching online skiing to parents who want to know how to teach their own kids to ski. From my years and years of experience, I knew that teaching the basics of skiing wasn’t rocket science, and most parents had the skills they needed to teach their kids one their own (while avoiding the $300/day ski school cost). So I put everything I knew about teaching kids to ski into my signature course, “First Tracks: A Parent’s Guide to Teaching Kids to Ski”. It’s designed to walk parents through all of the steps they need to successfully teach their own kids to ski.
